Welcome to Peace Love Hormones, AKA The Modern Woman's Apothecary!

Your liver is one of the hardest-working organs in your body, playing a vital role in detoxification, hormone regulation, and overall health. As women, supporting our liver is especially crucial for maintaining balanced hormones and feeling our best throughout all stages of our menstrual and life cycles. This liver-supporting herbal decoction combines the time-tested power of dandelion root, chaste tree berries, yellow dock root, and a Traditional Chinese Medicine favorite, bupleurum root —each selected for its unique benefits to your liver and hormonal well-being.

- Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) supports liver detoxification and bile production, which aids digestion and helps the body efficiently eliminate toxins.

- Chaste tree berries (Vitex agnus-castus) gently promote hormone balance by enhancing the liver's ability to metabolize and eliminate excess hormones like estrogen.

- Yellow dock root (Rumex crispus) acts as a natural blood cleanser and supports the liver in processing toxins while easing constipation, a key factor in hormone detox.

- Bupleurum root (Bupleurum chinense) is a staple in traditional Chinese medicine, known for its ability to reduce liver stagnation and enhance the liver's detox pathways.

In addition to this powerful decoction, I love supporting my liver daily with our Peace Love Hormones Bitters tincture, which promotes optimal digestion and nutrient absorption—essential for liver health. Pairing this with other mindful practices, such as eating whole, nutrient-dense foods, staying hydrated, and managing stress, creates a comprehensive approach to liver care and overall vitality.

Read on to learn how to prepare this simple yet potent decoction and discover how it can become a valuable addition to your self-care routine for hormonal harmony and radiant health.

Ingredients

Herbal Blend:

  • 1 part Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale)
  • 1 part Chaste tree berries (Vitex agnus-castus)
  • 1/2 part Yellow dock root (Rumex crispus)
  • 1/4 part Bupleurum root (Bupleurum chinense)

Equipment:

  • Small saucepan with a lid
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Measuring spoons
  • Glass jar or mug

Directions

  1. Measure the herbs: Combine the desired parts of each herb into a bowl. For instance, if using tablespoons as a measure, mix 1 tablespoon dandelion root, 1 tablespoon chaste tree berries, 1/2 tablespoon yellow dock root, and 1/2 tablespoon bupleurum root. However, I recommend making bigger batches for convenience.

  2. Combine with water: Add the mixed herbs to the saucepan. Use approximately 16 ounces (2 cups) of water per tablespoon of herbs. Adjust water based on the total amount of herbs used.

  3. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the saucepan to prevent evaporation and allow it to simmer for 20–30 minutes .

  4. Strain the decoction: Once the time is up, remove the saucepan from heat and allow the decoction to cool slightly. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a glass jar or mug.

  5. Enjoy or store: Drink the decoction while warm, or store it in a glass container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Sweeten with honey if desired. Reheat gently on the stovetop before drinking.

Notes:

  • Decoctions are ideal for extracting the beneficial compounds from tougher plant parts like roots and seeds.
  • If you prefer a milder flavor, dilute the decoction with water or add a natural sweetener like honey.
