Cortisol is showing up early
Cortisol is supposed to rise gently before dawn to wake you. In a stressed nervous system it rises early and hard, and it lands at 3am with a racing mind attached.
If you're running on caffeine to start the day and something to come down at night, you're feeding the pattern from both ends.
What tends to help
Not more sedation. Herbs that work on the stress response itself — adaptogens like ashwagandha — aimed at the late-night cortisol spike rather than at knocking you out.
